ABOUT ME

Hi, I'm Fay Savage - a painter integrating mixed media and collage on an everlasting adventure of experimentation and play. It's been said that my abstract, contemporary, and expressionist works delve into the complexities of emotion, memory, and the natural world. From my perspective, I'm just over here in my process, making things that I love - whether that means I find them fascinating or full of beauty, or usually a little of both.
My creative journey has been profoundly shaped by a traumatic brain injury at age 20, which heightened my already sensitive nature and influenced my unique approach to art. This experience, along with my deep emotional resonance with the world around me (HSP), informs every piece I create, with an exploration of texture, color, and form. I let intuition guide my work.
The head injury, at this stage, although I still experience long-term symptoms, is a gift and an asset that has allowed me to tune into a deeper awareness and nuance to the visual world. The paintings often display extremely subtle details and textures that can only really be experienced up close and in person. Often with sculptural qualities, they draw you in and offer a peek into my inner world, and the landscape of human emotions we all share.
My process is all about exploring emotion, memory, and the natural world through color and texture. I'm very interested in using my intuitive painting process to allow my shadow parts space to express. For as Karl Jung said, "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate." I sense that under the right circumstances, shadow parts of myself enjoy participating in my painting process and will even show me patterns they are holding onto in an effort to keep me safe. I really enjoy seeing where they take me, as we work together to build cohesive, textured, multi-layered worlds through collage, acrylics, dry tools, and repurposed and vintage materials.
I care deeply about environmental issues and preserving nature, so my studio practice is as earth-friendly as possible. I use carefully chosen repurposed materials in my pieces, recycled materials to package for shipping, and I don't pour acrylic paint down the drain, but rather save and dry it to apply to the canvas for texture. I recycle almost all plastics by using Ridwell, mailing the plastic I can’t recycle here in NC to the west coast.
//Currently, my work is displayed at Red Dog Gallery, and a new series will be at Camino Bakery this fall, both here in downtown Winston-Salem. There is a variety of pieces on display at my home, and I sometimes will host gatherings to view and for studio visits. Use the contact me form below if you're interested.
Although I graduated from Wake Forest University, I only just moved back here to North Carolina after living, studying, and working in New York state, and then Portland, Oregon for over 15 years. I'm really enjoying rediscovering Winston-Salem, and I'm always happy to connect with fellow artists and art enthusiasts in the community. Bids to reach out and collaborate or just connect over coffee are highly encouraged. Thanks for being here!
